  • Welcome to our first #AskanExpert — in honor of the upcoming finals week, we spoke with sleep scientist Cassie Hilditch, senior research associate with the SJSU Research Foundation based at NASA Ames Research Center, about how we can all sleep tight (and not let the bedbugs bite).

She wants people to focus on the benefits of good sleep: “Think about sleep as this amazing tool that can make us feel better. It’s pretty amazing that you can close your eyes and your brain does all this work sort of offline, to get you at your best the next day.”

  • Congratulations to Daryl Eggers, professor emeritus of chemistry, who accompanied his spring 2023 retirement from SJSU with a flurry of publications.

“Because I had time to reflect and think deeper, these papers finally happened,” he states. “I feel like I'm ending my career on a high note. The rest of the world doesn't know it yet, but I truly feel like I did something important.”

Read on to learn about Eggers’ contributions to chemistry and his fascination with water on the SJSU NewsCenter.

  • “Comparison is the thief of joy.” That’s why tip #5 for battling impostor syndrome is simple: Stop comparing yourself to others.

You don’t know their journey, and you can’t see the potential you have.

Tip #6: Focus on your work, not the outcome.

Cassandra Paul, physics and astronomy professor, says it best: “Overcoming impostor syndrome isn’t about success—it’s about focusing on your efforts, not external measures.”

For more tips, check out the latest #SJSUWSQ.

  • Before it’s 2025, take a moment to relive some of our greatest Spartan moments of this past year on the Year in Review.

How will you ring in the new year?

  • Our fourth tip to help combat impostor syndrome may sound strange, but it’s all upside: Embrace failure.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) director Kathy Lee explains, “Individuals should be willing to take risks, even if they doubt their qualifications, skills or experiences. Seeking new experiences can help challenge any negative assumptions students may have about themselves.”

And you don’t have to do it alone! CAPS counselors help students “overcome negative self-beliefs, manage anxiety-inducing situations, and cultivate a growth mindset focused on individual strengths while reducing perfectionism.”

Learn more about this tip and others in the latest #SJSUWSQ.

It really motivated me to keep working on my writing until it became my main focus. It feels really good [to have completed my degree]. It’s honestly gone by faster than I thought. I’m definitely going to miss SJSU and all the great people I’ve met, but I’m super grateful for the experiences I had here and for everything I’ve learned.”

  • Our third tip to help combat impostor syndrome is “Reframe your thoughts.”

Assistant professor of psychology Lesther Papa lives this advice.

“I get students who say, ‘I'm going to be the first in my family to finish school or the first to apply for a graduate program,’” he explains. “And of course, it makes sense to think, ‘Well, I'm doing it and nobody else did. Maybe I shouldn't have.’ But I'm trying to help them flip the narrative from ‘Maybe I shouldn't have’ to ‘Maybe I just need to be the first.’

“I tell them, ‘It's not that you didn't deserve it. Because you’ve done things that no one else has done, you unfortunately don't have a role model. So you have to be that for yourself.’ And then that opens up a very different conversation.”

Check out the latest #SJSUWSQ for more tips on how best to prevent and combat impostor syndrome.
